St. Ignatius’ High School, Gumla, was established in 1934 and is managed by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus popularly known as Jesuits. It is named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. It is a religious minority school aided by government. It is affiliated to Jharkhand Academic Council, Ranchi. This is a registered Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 27 June 1958 at Patna bearing the No. 12 of 1958-59. The registration was renewed after the formation of new State Jharkhand and a fresh registration No 178/2005-06 Ranchi was allotted. Through the Memo No. 1206 dated 21/02/1936 this school was accorded with Recognition by the Govt. of Bihar, and again through the Memo No 5642-46 dated 25/02/1970 the school was declared as Minority educational institution.

The purpose to start St. Ignatius’ High School was to avail quality education to the rural mass of Gumla, especially those who could not afford to go to Ranchi or other big cities for higher education. Accordingly, St. Ignatius’ High School, Gumla became the premier education institution of the area.

The high school comprises of class 6 to 10 only for boys and Intermediate section (Science, Arts and Commerce) is Co-ed. The school was upgraded with St. Ignatius’ Inter College by Fr. Florence Kujur, S.J. in 2004 offering subjects in Science, Arts and Commerce. Considering the public demand and reading the sign of time an English Medium School was initiated by Fr. Erentius Minj, S.J. in 2014. Now it has become a separate entity bearing the name ‘St. Xavier’s School, Gumla having its own premise in the same campus.

The management of the School is vested in the Ranchi Jesuit Society. The President of the Governing Body is Rev. Fr. Provincial of the Ranchi Jesuit Province. The School/Inter College is intended primarily for the education of Catholic boys and girls, particularly of the Tribal Community. However, the school keeps its door open for other students too irrespective of cast and creed. The School makes a preferential option for the marginalized and seeks to give an all-round formation, inculcating both human and spiritual values.

The school tries to follow a comprehensive curriculum with expert and dedicated faculty members to accompany the students in their learning. The school periodically goes through self review and evaluation with the help of external expertise, which enhances the school to improve. There is a conscious effort to conscientise students (to bring awareness) to take care of the Common Home. An integrated approach is adapted to cater both the intellectual and affective dimensions favorable to overall formation of fine human beings.

The School aims at forming young men and women of competence, commitment, and compassion and of conscience.
